Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Bookmark on del.icio.us | diggBy vedran | March 15, 2008
‘Songs About Fucking’, the last Big Black studio album, ups the aggression ante on almost every front. The music is more bombastic, the production is harsher, and the lyrics are even more confrontational, delivered even more stridently than before. Rarely has a mere album been so brutal. ‘Songs About Fucking’ can be cited as an indelible influence on the mid-to-late-’90s glut of techno-industrial bands

As much as its forerunner “Show Your Bones”, “Is Is” didn’t meet expectations that Yeah Yeah Yeahs’s first album created. Even though songs originate from early days, only the “Rockers to Swallow” resembles what YYY’s could and used to be. It’s definitely certain that mellow sound is not what they should sound like.

At last Trent Reznor realized that all that self-pitying and pointless anger involved throughout his career could not be more deepened and turned into yet another successive album, at least not in new millennium. Excellent resemblance of post-apocalypse - lyrically, atmospherically and conceptually - on “Year Zero” is a great leap forward for Trent and band almost crossed by many fans.

As stated by Maynard J Keenan, Puscifer is as much a clothing line as it is a band. Long anticipated album “V is for Vagina” loosely satisfies the expectation and, even though it’s not bad, could easily be called more of an accessoire to the clothing line.

Even though Cass McCombs is not yet fully grown name among alternative/indie music fans, his second album PREfection delivers much hidden treasures of psychedelic pop songs, especially those hidden under names like “Tourist woman”,”Equinox” or perfect psychedelic gem “Multiple Suns”. Another artist waiting to be discovered.

First album, entitled as abbreviation of band title, already lunched boys from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club into extreme heights positioning them as one of contemporary rock ‘n’ roll saviors. This is not a surprise by any means. Their fusion of classic rock blended with influences of darker late eighties sound and packed in loud and mid-to-high tempo package, including few hits like “Whatever Happened to My Rock N Roll” and “White Palms”, deservingly justified the hope.

While Tomahawk was most accessible band in post Faith No More Patton-based bands, “Anonymous” is departure to more Mr. Bungle oriented sound but at same time a million miles away from it. Cleverly titled as a credit to anonymous Native American songwriters from which this songs were born from and picked up by Tomahawk to wrap it up in envelope to be played by a rock band. Definitely a must listen for fans of both Native American and rock music.

Collection of various songs that never managed to appear on other Nirvana albums, appeared on this compilation that revealed to large audiences little details of Nirvana’s growing up. “Incesticide” captured most experimental side of Nirvana but also most developed and, could be said, progressive song writing such as “Aero Zeppelin”, “Downer” or “Big Long Now”
